The Presenting and Receiving of Awards Speech

This kind of talk comes to the fore during moments when you present or receive an award. The purpose of this type of speech is to express appreciation, to bring recognition to the person or group for what they have done and to inspire others to want to reach for higher goals by paying tribute to those who deserve the award.

Here are some suggestions for you to remember when you make this kind of speech: When you present an award, you must speak briefly about the occasion, the sponsor, if any, etc. Tell about the individual(s) to be honored and what he has done. Don't embarrass the person receiving the award or the audience by using too much praise. Use cheerful words and manner and don't be too serious or stuffy. Also, don't spend a lot of time talking about the award or the honor. Talk about the person who is receiving the honor. Lastly, present the award and your congratulations at the end of your talk.

The best response to a tribute or award is simply to say "Thank you" and sit down. However, in some cases, you may be called upon to say more than just "Thank you." For this reason, make a brief speech expressing your appreciation for the receiving of a tribute or an award, and end your talk by stating the pleasure the honor or the award will give you.

Here is a model speech of presenting and receiving awards:

Purpose: To pay tribute to a student who saved two children from a fire

Award Speech

Ladies and gentlemen, today I am pleased to speak for the students of U. S. T. High School in presenting a special award to Thomas Tolentino for his bravery and courage.

On May 5 of this year, Thomas was babysitting for a neighbor whose wife was rushed to the hospital for emergency operation. While looking after the children, the kitchen stove exploded. The house burst into flames. Thomas went into the bedroom and got the two children and a bed sheet. He wet the bed sheet in the bathroom sink. Then he wrapped the wet sheet around him and the children and carried them through the burning house to safety.

On behalf of the students of U. S. T. High School, I wish to present to you, Thomas Tolentino, a Life Saver Plaque and a letter of appreciation from the mayor of our city. Congratulations!

Thank you.
